Under general supervision of the Manager for Instructional Services, the Student Services Advisor provides a wide variety of academic, administrative and student support services to prospective and continuing students for the Division of Biological Sciences (DoBS). Responsibilities include: instructional support, general intake, academic advising, career development and enrichment programming (via Discovering Opportunities in Biological Sciences; Do/Bio), and coordination of enrollment processes.
Responsible for interpretation and implementation of appropriate campus and divisional policies, regulations, and procedures. Participate in planning for short-term and long-term division goals and objectives in support of student academic and educational (Do/Bio) programs. Work closely with supervisor, advisors, Do/Bio Manager, Director of SIS, and faculty on student affairs issues and programmatic matters.
The incumbent will serve as initial point of contact for the Division of Biological Sciences' Student and Instructional Services (SIS) office. Responsible for triage advising services, providing guidance to students and other constituents on UCSD and divisional policies and procedures. Provide individuals with accurate information and appropriate referrals to various campus offices/resources. Provide general office management and administrative support in highly computerized and team-oriented environment.
Overtime may be required.
Proven knowledge of University policies and procedures related to all aspects of student affairs curriculum including, but not limited to: course transfer requirements, the college system, the advising role in serving students, and services available to students through campus departments and agencies.
Demonstrated knowledge of Registrar's regulations and procedures for scheduling, registration, enrollment, and grading.
Proven knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Skill in service orientation, organization, active listening, and critical thinking. Ability to develop and effectively utilize resources and networks for learning, problem solving and effective liaison and referral.
Solid understanding of University rules and regulations. Ability to interpret policies, set logical priorities, make decisions independently, work with minimal directions, and negotiate conflicts.
