Tasks and responsibilities
 
  • Develop and validate a pipeline for whole genome sequencing of PPR and AI viruses using next generation sequencing platform;
  • Establish a pipeline for whole genome assembly of PPRV and AI genome and downstream analysis of next generation sequence data;
  • Maintain a repository of sera and PPR/AI/ND viruses for whole genome sequencing, lineage identification and genetic characterization;
  • Submit genome sequence data to public databases and disseminate results;
  • Transfer knowledge of the diagnostic and molecular epidemiological tools for PPR/AI/ND and other important transboundary animal diseases;
  • Provide APHL related group and fellow trainings to strengthen and improve MS capabilities in pathogen detection and characterization;
  • Assist APHL team in the organization and conduction of inter−laboratory trials for PPR and/or other important transboundary animal diseases;
  • Provide technical advice and guidance for the member states under PUI−Asia and PUI−Africa to implement disease diagnostic and molecular epidemiological tools;
  • Write and publish manuscripts on PPRV/AI/ND genome sequences and virus characterization.
 
 
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
 
 
Minimum Requirements
  • Advanced university degree in biological sciences/microbiology or veterinary medicine
  • Three years of relevant experience in veterinary laboratory, virology and molecular epidemiology of animal infectious diseases
  • Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of one of the other two or Arabic, Chinese, Russian

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Work experience in more than one location or area of work
  • Experience in molecular assays for animal pathogen detection and characterization,
  • Experience in gene sequencing techniques and molecular epidemiology for animal pathogens, especially, though not exclusively, on PPR/AI/ND viruses
  • Experience in planning, organization and conduction of international interlaboratory trials,
  • Experience in report writing and scientific publications
  • Experience in working in high containment laboratory facilities (e.g. BSL3)
  • Familiarity with of the organisation of international laboratory trainings and workshops is an asset.
