Department of Neurology

Interested in brain mechanisms underlying learning, motivation and decision-making? We need a research assistant in the Berke Lab (http://www.berkelab.org). We examine behavior and neural activity using a variety of advanced technologies in rats. We seek to understand how key neural circuits, and neuromodulators such as dopamine, achieve learning from rewards and the motivation to work for more rewards. We also wish to understand how these circuits malfunction in conditions such as drug addiction and Huntington’s Disease.

This position may involve a variety of research activities, including:

  • behavioral training of normal and genetically-modified rats,
  • stereotaxic brain surgery for virus delivery
  • building optic fiber and electrode devices for brain implants
  • immunohistochemistry
  • analysis of experimental data.

Suitable candidates at the Junior Specialist level include recent or upcoming graduates seeking to gain research experience using state-of-the-art neuroscience techniques, prior to applying to graduate school. Although we wish to make an appointment ASAP, there is some flexibility in start date for the right candidate.

Required qualifications include: • Specialists at the Junior rank should have completed (by the time of appointment) requirements for a BS/BA degree in a STEM field (e.g. Neuroscience, Biology, Physiological Psychology, or Animal Behavior). They should also have at least some prior experience working in a biology, neuroscience, or psychology research lab (e.g. as an undergraduate assistant). • Alternatively, they may have at least 4 years experience working in a research lab, with multiple relevant skills (e.g. genotyping, histology, rodent behavioral training, data management) • Specialists appointed at the Assistant or Associate rank should possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) in STEM field or at least five years of experience in the relevant specialization. • Familiarity with standard computer software (spreadsheets, word processing, etc).

Preferred qualifications include: • Experience with scientific programming, e.g. in MATLAB, C++, and/or Python.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service.

Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.
